AAS explanation of "casual breeding license"
In Response To: Re: me again ()

"Casual" is a legal term for a person who does something not on a full-time basis, not even as structured as part-time, but only as wanted. So "casual" is the correct term for a person who wants to breed their dog once, does not plan to do it again, and whose intent is not to make money.

Why permit this at all? Because if you accept that human perfectibility is still a long way off, and that humans will want to go on owning other species for a long time yet, then at least controls over the way these other species are produced and live are necessary.

AAS accepts that breeding of dogs for humans is going to go on for a long time yet, and so we have looked at the various ways of producing pups for consumption and we see that breeding the family dog "casually", once only, pups given to family members and friends, is far more humane than pups produced any other way. If we could make it the only legal way to breed, we would, but as long as it is legal to produce pups at home, it is legal to mass-produce them for sale. (The root of all animal suffering is the ownership of animals, but we won't go there in this thread!)

Lucky the dog bred once, having pups in the kitchen of its home, having everyone fussing over it and playing with its puppies, so that they are well socialized and have the best chance of living long, happy lives. That is the what AAS had in mind when it separated breeding licenses into "casual" and "commercial". If anyone breeds the family dog a second time, they are bumped to the "commercial" category. We know that we cannot guarantee with any regulation that any human will raise puppies this way and only give or sell them to decent, kind, stable people, but our regulations try to get as near to that as is possible at this time.
