CHILLIWACK, B.C. - The mayor of Chilliwack says animal control officers tried for weeks to track down one of the dogs involved in a weekend attack on a Fraser Valley woman.
Clint Hames says the justice system – and the owners – slowed attempts to have the dog destroyed.
On Saturday a 42-year-old woman suffered serious puncture wounds and cuts after she was attacked by two pit bull crosses.
The dog involved in the attack is named Samson. Hames says Samson had been declared dangerous after earlier mauling a small house pet. However, he says it took too long to get a search warrant and by the time officers had the necessary paperwork the dog had been moved to another location.
Later, Samson was delivered to the animal control facility by someone other than the owner. But the facility was broken into that same night, and Samson was spirited away before he could be destroyed.
Now, Samson is again in an animal control centre. And the city is applying for a destruction order for him and a second dog involved in the Saturday mauling.
The victim remains in hospital with serious wounds to her hand and legs.
