Animal shelter workers in trouble after springing dog from death row

DELTA - Police are investigating a dog-snatching after two SPCA employees allegedly took a Rottweiler from an animal shelter the same day it was scheduled to be euthanased.
Lorie Chortyk, SPCA spokeswoman, said the dog, Cheech, was taken Wednesday afternoon by two female employees who did not want to see it put down. The two women apparently refused to return the dog to the shelter, despite police involvement, and by Wednesday night Cheech was still missing.
The aggressive former guard dog had been at the shelter since February but had not responded to rehabilitation attempts to address his aggression around men, Chortyk said.
Assessments found Cheech too dangerous to be adopted and he was scheduled to be put down.
The two employees will be severely disciplined, if not fired, by the SPCA, Chortyk said.
Delta police are investigating, but Const. Sharlene Brooks said it's too early to say whether charges will be laid.
