To The Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:
The petition of the undersigned, residents, of the Province of British Columbia, states that:
Many thousands of dogs are chained or penned permanently, left to live solitary, desperate lives filled with aching loneliness, unbearable boredom and excruciating frustration. Many dogs live their entire lives on chains, knee deep in mud and feces, or living in small pens/kennels, on either bare concrete (which either freezes in winter or heats to beyond comfort in summer) under porches, in wire cages, dark garages, alone in yards and the list goes on. These dogs are left basically in solitary confinement in deplorable, filthy, inhumane conditions without even a warm dry place to sleep. They are most often malnourished and dehydrated and are often deprived of even the most basic medical care. In our society solitary confinement is considered cruel and inhumane and is a treatment reserved only for our most extreme, prolific and heinous criminals but it is legal and a totally acceptable way to keep a dog.
Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House amend the Animal Cruelty Legislation to Ban the permanent chaining and penning of dogs, remove them out of the Crimes Against Property Laws and recognise them as sentient beings, and consider solitary confinement/isolation to be cruel and inhumane and to cause severe distress.
Thank you!
Many sincere thanks to everyone who signed the "Break the Chains" petition. And especially thanks to those who worked hard to get so many signatures.
The petition was created by Claudette Tremblay of
Coquitlam BC, and assisted by Animal Advocates' large internet supporters.
The petition signatures were tabled in the
Legislature shortly before the house rose in June, 2012 by Claudette's MLA,
Mike Farnworth.
The tabled petition next goes to committee in the
Fall session (if there is a Fall session). Let's hope so for the sake of BC's many chained dogs
that committee makes some recommendations.
Initiatives like this petition are also important
because they raise public awareness.
