  • Morgan
  • Puppies like Morgan shouldn't have to be rescued from lives on the end of ropes. There should be a law against this in B.C. but there isn't, in spite of Animal Advocates' 10 years of asking municipalities.

  • Vancouver Yard Dogs - Eton Street
  • Eton Street - this is one of many dogs kept in this filthy pen (and sometimes in the dark garage) at this location, as many as seven different dogs in the last three years. They live their lonely lives for a period of time and then they disappear. We believe that several have been stolen by decent women, forced to do the right thing because the SPCA and the City won't. But most have been disposed of by the owner. We know that he was in the habit of getting dogs from the Vancouver City Pound. This dog has been in these conditions - mud, litter, feces and urine for about a year. The SPCA has been told many times, about each and every dog. Video one shows that the dog has ear disease, as she shakes her head repeatedly, probably untreated for a long time. Video two shows her urinating into the mud. Video three shows the piles of feces she has to walk through.

This Doberman is one of the many dogs mistreated at this location for years. We were struck by the mad look in its eyes, as though it's treatment had made it insane. It disappeared in 2003 as did the pup that replaced it. We do not know what happened to them, but can only hope that some brave, kind person rescued them although it is more likely that the owner just got rid of them, possibly at an SPCA or a pound.

  • Vancouver Yard Dogs - Templeton Junk Yard Dog
  • Not very big and not very scary. It was the efforts of a neighbour who got Rocky off his heavy chain at last, not the SPCA or the City of Vancouver, but he is still an lonely, isolated yard dog in a junk yard that is in the heart of the city.

  • Vancouver Yard Dogs - Inverness Sharpei
  • Chained for over three years. We checked on this dog again (march 2004) and the shepherd cross that was also chained there is gone. We don't believe he had the luck at last to be rescued as we are generally informed when this happens. We think it more likely that he never had any luck in his short life and was dumped at the pound or SPCA.

  • Vancouver Yard Dogs - East 32nd Ave Old Pointer
  • Poor old thing lived his life in this cage, smaller than a chicken coop. Whenever we saw him he was circling his "house" like a robot. He would stop and bark and then circle again. AAS offered to buy him, but we were turned down and a few weeks later we were told that he had died.

  • (Email to AAS) There is another chained dog across the lane from me. This dog is really young I think. I just went to have a look and the dog is so frightened on its chain. I think this dog could be in for a life on the chain. The tether is maybe 5 feet long, and there is a dog house, and I think some water in a bucket. I can tell that the dog is frightened. I took one of my dogs to touch noses with this new dog, but he got caught in his tether and had no idea how to get untangled. I thought I'd let you know because this dog is a real gentle soul.

  • Burnaby Yard Dogs - Dominion Street
  • Someone gave this old dog "free to a good home" and this is what happened to him. This is the second dog at this address in the last two years to be kept this way. The SPCA has told complainants about both dogs that there is nothing it can do as long as the dog is provided with food, water, and shelter. The first dog was rescued by a neighbour; this dog has not been as lucky. Recently, the SPCA discouraged a neighbour from insisting that it do something, saying that the dog then may be penned or muzzled. The neighbour offered to testify to the dog's conditions but the SPCA was not interested. Last week, in the freezing rain, his tether was tangled and he stood there, his head down, drenched to the skin.

  • Burnaby Yard Dogs - Dalmation
  • A muddy run hidden beside the garage, a plastic igloo, in the cold winter rain. This Dalmatian is still young and there is hope for it - but no hope from this family. The SPCA responded to one of several complaints, saying there is nothing it can do as long as the dog has food, water, and shelter.
