Yes it's wonderful that someone stepped up to help these pups. Yes it's great to see a network of people come together from both sides of the border to help, and yes it's awesome that these pups will now hopefully go to new loving homes. Nobody is disputing any of that. We are all involved in rescue, and we all care deeply and passionately about animals or none of us would do what we do.
What is wrong with this scenario, is that these pups should have stayed in private rescue, and not been taken to an SPCA where they will be taking space away from dogs who already live in other over-crowded BC SPCA facilities. If Nanaimo has space, then other dogs from other SPCA's should get priority, right? Isn't that what the new transport van was supposed to be for? Moving animals between shelters to increase their chances at adoption?
And what about the heartworm? These pups have obviously not been tested yet, so why expose other SPCA dogs who are already stressed with potentially lowered immunity? All the more reason to keep these hound pups in private rescue if you choose to bring them here.
I am not criticizing anyone for rescuing these pups, I think it's wonderful, but I am very critical about how they went about doing it.
