Doing one's best isn't hypocritical

I don't quite understand the "hypocrisy" argument, regarding feeding meat to companion animals.
If one is choosing to breed (create) animals for their own pleasure then I understand the argument.
However, short of killing ALL the companion, or captive animals in the world, I don't know of an alternative to feeding them meat - because it is what they must have to survive.
If one is striving for zero breeding, striving towards spay/neuter of ALL the animals that we have in our care, and striving towards a vegetarian or vegan diet for ourselves, then we are truly doing our best, and to me, truly doing one's best is not a hypocritical act.

How could be so upset about horses dying, while still dining on pigs, cows, chicken, fish and dairy?
I have over a ten year history feeding my cats a nutritionally balanced vegan diet
