In the field of animal advocacy, like any other field, there is a broad
spectrum. While PETA does tend to swing far to the left, it is an
organization that is valuable for the fact that it has raised awareness
of the challenges faced by animals in so many different contexts.
I'm very concerned about the term "properly conducted research". Is this
similar to "accepted animal husbandry" (in the BC Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act)
that allows for the abusive
treatment of farm animals? If so, we really need to give it a closer
look.
It is interesting to me how we humans might like to refer to
ourselves as animal advocates when it comes to our "sacred
animals"...which in our culture, tend to be dogs and cats. But beyond
that, the animals used in research and those that are farmed for us to
eat exponentially are frequently conspiciously absent from our voices of
concern .
For all the research that has been done on animals, we still have not
found cures to many illnesses so how effective is all this testing?
While I may not think it is 'right' to go in and steal animals from a
research facility, it is perhaps the strongest way to get the message
out about this issue. Unfortunately the coorporation that have so many
millions of dollars invested in this research are not going to listen to
our voices.
Perhaps the pendulum needs to swing to the far left of the
spectrum to compensate for the far right perspectives we are dealing
with.....and then, down the very long and winding, tumultuous road we
can come to a more harmonious place where the animals are free from
their tortured roles as voiceless slaves to our arrogant species.
