Powell River SPCA regularly responds to complaints on the Sliammon Reserve

While it seems there is an ongoing misconception that the SPCA cannot investigate situations of cruelty/neglect on reserve land, please know that the Powell River SPCA regularly responds to complaints on the Sliammon Reserve. And without hesitation. Calls come from concerned people who live on & off the reserve.

Approximately 15% of my yearly files were on Sliammon. Owners were given verbal and written recommendations, just like anywhere else.

There are also several SPCA volunteers who help Sliammon community members with various pet-related "issues". Volunteers meet with pet owners to offer spay/neuter assistance to those who cannot afford it. So-called "problem" dogs are accepted into care. Medical costs have no limit. There were several hit by cars this past year, that needed emergency care of over $1000 each.

Mail drops and newsletters have been distributed in the community...and have been well received. Even encouraged by the Sliammon Council. Hopefully, the relationship will continue to build, so more educational material will be welcomed. And, so residents on the reserve will feel confident calling the SPCA for support, guidance and/or to report cruelty in their neighbor's backyard.

I no longer live in Powell River but wanted to make sure you knew that the Powell River SPCA is actively involved with the Sliammon reserve and has always responded to reported and unreported concerns. Audrey Hill is still the volunteer branch manager and receives phone calls all day & night. I am confident that she will continue to ensure that animals on the reserve do not get overlooked. As you know, they didn't choose where they were born!
