Why would the Ontario SPCA kill animals because they had ringworm? This is a highly treatable, not lethal condition, that just requires persistance to cure. Is not the SPCA supposed to go over and above what any small rescue organization would do when faced with this situation? Shouldn't they be setting some sort of example regarding compassion and genuine caring for the welfare of animals in their care. I find this wholely lacking in this situation.
If outside pressures did not come to bear down on this situation, what would have happened? What has happened to the SPCA as an organization?
I remember growing up, if you surrendered an animal to your local BCSPCA, there was a certain amount of trust that they would go the distance to care and find a home for that animal. But the dealings that I have had with the BCSPCA have been disappointing to put it mildly. The trust factor is totally gone as it seems that outside pressure on this organization, i.e. stories in the media, is what gets results.
But what I find the most disturbing, is that they portray themselves as the voice for the voiceless. When an animal ends up at the SPCA this can be the end of the line for them, like the pup they were going to kill recently or all those pit bulls the SPCA off loaded onto rescuers who feared the SPCA would kill them all if they didn't take them.
You would think that this organization would show some leadership. How could anyone look into the eyes of this poor unfortunate creatures and then kill them. Because these animals have souls, they are NOT disposable !!
