"We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves"?

Those who cannot speak (aside from the animals it has silenced permanently by killing them), appear to be the SPCA itself.

BC SPCA COO, Kim Capri, runs the branches and she had the authority to order that no puppy mill dogs be killed and that offers to foster and rehabilitate from Jennifer Dickson and other, clearly responsible people, be accepted. This was not done and the SPCA's machinery to excuse killing dogs ground several of them to death. We refer to C.A.M.P., the BC SPCA's spurious "science" that justifies the disposal of unsellable cats and dogs.

And although it is not specifically Craig Daniell's job to run the branches, he was the SPCA's fair-haired boy (even before being parachuted into the hole left by the latest mysterious disappearance of a BC SPCA boss in May) for coming in like gangbusters, making one heroic cruelty seizure after another, getting floods of donations and deflecting the media away from the interesting smells coming from the SPCA's rotting corporate body.

We're glad he made those seizures of course. After fifty years of unchecked cruelty in BC because the SPCA just looked the other way, or worse, actually sabotaged evidence, animal abusers got away with torture and murder and Mr Daniell's actions have made fear of prosecution a preventative tool as well as actually rescuing suffering animals.

Stonewalling, silence, and deliberate misinformation from the BC SPCA is not confined to its treatment of animals. It will not produce the audited financial statements that the law requires of it, and it has not for many years. When asked for them, it disingenuously offers unaudited statements and tells the media that nothing is wrong, that anyone can see the statements. If pushed, it says they will be ready soon...but soon never arrives. And then it falls silent.

AAS has documented in its WebMag and on this messageboard, over and over, how the SPCA is a culture of secrecy , misinformation and double-speak. The fact that the SPCA's spin doctor did not leave with her master-marketing boss and is still the SPCA's chief of weasel-words is infamous. Who in their right mind can trust an organization whose spokesperson is not credible? If Mr Daniell is happy to continue to use her services, this bodes very ill for the reform of the SPCA.

Mr Daniell was warned by AAS six months ago that certain employees were going to dirty the name of the SPCA he was trying to reform, and they have. Why are they still in positions of power over animals?

Mr Daniell needs to do more than make splashy seizures, as necessary and good as they are. He needs a very large broom to sweep out the Augean stables that smell so bad at the BC SPCA. He is not responsible for past BC SPCA actions, and he should be allowed sufficient time to correct all the wrongs - in fact AAS has told Mr Daniell that it expects it will take him five years to weed through all the self-serving employees and policies - but we think if he started with the replacement of the public relations person, who has a long history of misleading the public by speaking for the self-interest of the BC SPCA, not for truly speaking for animals, much trust might be restored.
