Anyone who has become toughened to the murder of healthy animals needs to be removed from the job. I know an Animal Control officer at a municipal pound who has been on the job for 16 years. Back when she started it was still common practice to murder the excess animals. Animal control carried out the procedures back then, but it was NOT easy for them, she tells me she can still she their faces as she chokes back the tears. Things have changed a bit, now the vet must do the injecting. But the ACO must deliver the murder victim to the vet and then must unceremoniously take the carcass to the dump.
The murders have definetely decreased over the years, mostly due to public outcry, and they are carried out only on unhealthy animals. Still she absolutely dreads having to do these deeds and they weigh very heavily on her soul. I used to work with her as an ACA, but spoke out publicly against the impending murder of on of our sweethearts. I have been deemed "inappropriate" by the management at muni hall so no longer hold my position. However I will continue to monitor and speak when necessary. I will support the aforementioned ACO, I wish they were all like her, she is selfless, hardworking and full of love for the animals.
