AAS position statement on pit bull breeding *LINK* *PIC*

AAS has rescued many pit bull crosses and we have one in rehabilitation right now. I have never met a dog I didn't like, including pit bulls. But too many of them are dangerous and I suspect that most pit bull defenders don't have children and are not able to be rational about the breed they love.

The breed is not only too dangerous, but it suffers too much too. It is heartless for pit bull defenders to want this breed to survive in the form it is in. So many people are cruel to pit bulls, not just the fighters and the bikers. Pit bull "rescuers" keep them in lifetime isolation, in crates, muzzled, in separate rooms. And they pass them on, and "rehome" them over and over. Their actions are truer than their words. They say the breed is no more dangerous than any other, but then they lock them up and isolate them. And finally, even pit bull lovers and rescuers have to kill some of them, after they have ripped apart one of their other dogs, or attacked a child.

Pit bull defenders must do more than talk if they truly love their breed. They must start asking for legislation to have the dangerous traits bred out, leaving the loving traits that they love so much. If they will not do that, they must stop expecting society to take huge risks with its children so that they can have a pit bull.

A life on a lonely chain is the fate of many fighting breed dogs...
