Something very important must be understood if we are all to make the SPCA do real animal welfare.
It is NOT the SPCA's mandate to protect the public, it is the SPCA's mandate to help animals, and it gave Sophie no help....worse, it REFUSED an offer of help for Sophie.
Worse yet, it gave Sophie, unrehabilitated, to an unsuspecting family, who were then bitten, and who had the misery of bringing back a dog that they loved....to be killed. We have been told that the man cried unconsolably in the SPCA's bathroom.
Not human welfare. Not animal welfare. Just SPCA welfare.
The SPCA has been taking care of itself for a least fifty years. It has been taking care of business. Everyone who searches for excuses for the SPCA's actions, to justify what no real animal welfarist would do, is postponing the day when the SPCA starts to practice real animal welfare, and is prolonging the suffering of hundreds and thousands of animals.
Truly, it is not okay to not get it and to keep excusing the inexcusable.
