I personally don't agree with banning simply because it doesn't address the whole picture of unregulated breeding and people moving on to other breeds that are not yet banned. But, I know that gov'ts generally make short term decisions that cost the least amount of money, and to me that says a ban is inevitable. It's fast, cheap, uncomplicated and protects the public, which is what a gov't is supposed to do. On a radio talk show last week a political analyst stated that a govt only makes decisions that reach 4 yrs ahead to the next election. To me this says that no govt is going to pay for education that will take many years to reap rewards, so that leaves all the educating to breed rescue groups.
This past weekend the Vancouver Sun classifieds had NO ads for Pit Bulls or Pit Bull crosses. I check fairly often and I don't recall EVER seeing this before, so I would like to think breeding of Pit Bulls has already slowed down. Or, perhaps with those 2 kennel fires in the Fraser Valley, the 2 biggest PB suppliers lost all their stock for now. Hopefully they won't start up again. If this trend continues, then if/when the ban comes into effect, there shouldn't be an excess amount of these dogs to find homes for and the existing ones who are owned by someone should be grandfathered. That leave whatever dogs are already in pounds and shelters, plus whichever ones are dumped by jerk owners who are afraid of the impending ban. Look at that Pit x mother with 6 pups who were abandoned in Port Hardy a few days ago. I hope if a ban is coming, the gov't gives a ton of notice that gives the rescue world enough time to cope. ie: Jan 2006 or something................
