Statistics are notoriously untrustworthy. AAS is bombarded with statistics from pit bull defenders that "prove" that Cockers bite more than Pit bulls do for example.

Perhaps they do. That would likely be because they are represented in the dog population 20 or 30 times as much as Pit bulls are. But the only relevant point is that Cockers can't be blamed for fatal or maiming attacks, and it is fatal and maiming attacks that society must protect itself against, not Cocker spaniels. Bites are something that society is prepared to live with.
What matters to society is the number of severe bites and fatal bites, and pit bulls, in their tiny numbers, are responsible for as much as 25% of those.

All the fatal dog bite statistics we have read over the last few years contradict each other. One example: From a partisan Pit bull defender's web site http://ncrf2004.tripod.com/:

1997: 20 deaths, 4 by Pit bulls 20% (Pit bulls represent 1% or less of the dog population)

There isn't time to find all the contradictions, so we don't quote statistics much, but the fact that the Pit bull isn't even on the American Kennel Clubs list of 50 most popular breeds for 2000, yet it accounts for as many as 25% of fatal attacks, is hard to ignore. Our criteria for believing that Pit bulls are disproportionally dangerous, is a commonsense conclusion based on several factors. One, that even pit bull defenders say they have a high prey drive, something that makes any dog dangerous. Two, that the serious, unprovoked attacks in our province are almost always by Pit bulls or Pit bull crosses. Three, that even Pit bull rescuers can't have more than one or two pit bulls or they will kill each other, or kill the other dogs in the family. Four, that Pit bulls are genetically selected for fighting, and are equipped with huge, powerful jaws, and with powerful musculature. And four, that I don't know any honest person who, if confronted with a Cocker spaniel running toward them, or a Pit bull running toward them, wouldn't be much more fearful of the Pit bull, and that includes Pit bull defenders.
