The giant Das Tierheim Berlin animal shelter is the largest in Europe since Aug 2001. Presently housing 193 dogs 98 cats and 98 assorted small animals.

It receives no money from the city, and is financed exclusively through "memberships" and donations.

Featuring a super modern interior with heated tile floors and sunny glass enclosures for both dogs and cats.

People who have committed themselves to feeding feral cat colonies, may bring the cats to the shelter for free vet care and free spay or neuter.

Also any animals adopted out with chronic conditions such as hip dysphasia or chronic skin problems are given free vet care at the shelter for the rest of their lives.

Volunteer "animal inspectors" are taught how to follow up on adoptions, and visit the animals in their new homes.

In the case that an animal is thought to sick or too dangerous to be adopted out after some time, there is a special commission including a vet, that makes the final decision.

This is the garden and there is a cemetary too...
