SPCA - animal welfarists or crime busters?

The PCA Act and the SPCA's manual makes it clear that animal welfare is the purpose of the SPCA - not crime-busting. Seizing and removing animals is seldom what is best for the animals. But it is very much in the best interests of the SPCA, getting it headlines in the media every time. Those headlines garner hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations, while the seized animals are in terror, catching SPCA diseases, going mad in cells, sold to strangers who the SPCA does not check for suitability, and killed outright by the SPCA for being "unadoptable" - the junk-science DTA4 test being the justifier. The judge threw the Douglas/Hill case out of court. The almost $20,000 the SPCA demanded for "care" of the seized animals has not been paid, but the SPCA could sue for it any time it wants to. The dogs and horses were all sold, so the SPCA probably made a tidy profit, even from a case that was thrown out of court.

Craig Daniell, the BC SPCA CEO, has shown by many promotions and actions that he is a "crime buster" not an animal welfarist. In our opinion, Daniell has done the right thing the wrong way. After decades of the SPCA ignoring almost every case of cruelty in BC, especially ignoring puppymills, thereby keeping them in business, Daniell was hired to do damage control (the damage from AAS's investigations of puppymills that the SPCA had kept in business for decades) and to make money by grandstanding seizures.

In no actions of Daniell's have we seen any proof that animal welfare is of the least interest to him. He uses terrified, helpless animals as pawns for his crime busting career.

The SPCA has a frightening power over those with none in the case of the animals it controls, and very little in the case of the people it victimizes. In our opinion, it is using its power to enrich itself and it will continue to do so until government is convinced to investigate it.
