An open letter to our friends, family, supporters, and members of the community from the SPCA of Texas:
ABC’s program 20/20 broadcast a segment 6/3/05 featuring the rescue and investigative work of the SPCA of Texas. The segment was entitled: “Cruelty to Owners?” We have received numerous calls, emails, and other correspondence relating to the show and are compelled to respond.
The SPCA of Texas was shocked and disappointed by the irresponsible nature of the story. Not only was the segment biased and misleading, it was factually inaccurate. The report included such statements that imply that the SPCA of Texas’ rescue and investigations department conducts “raids” to bring in money, and that such efforts brought in “six million dollars last year.” The truth is the SPCA of Texas is only awarded animals after a court makes a determination that an animal has been “cruelly treated.” The donations for rescue and investigations work in 2004 totaled approximately $165,000 less than two-thirds of the cost of actual performing such services, and a far cry from six million dollars claimed by 20/20. Furthermore, the segment tied our name to other organizations that we are neither associated with nor sponsor. (Read our “Fact Check” of the statements made in the story)
The SPCA of Texas is an advocate for animals who are mistreated, and there will always be a small group of detractors who disagree with our mission. Unfortunately, 20/20 chose to broadcast selective information provided by this minority in an effort to increase ratings through sensationalism.
Our mission is clear: The SPCA of Texas is dedicated to improving the welfare of all animals in our community. This past year SPCA of Texas served more than 30,000 animals in the North Texas area. We do so through numerous programs made possible through our staff, volunteers and supporters who make our efforts possible. Furthermore, we are constantly evaluating our work and practices and take feedback about our efforts seriously. The 20/20 broadcast not only contained false statements but it damages our reputation and threatens our ability to provide such help in our community.
If you are a member of our community, we invite your comments and questions. Even better, come visit one of our facilities and see the care and compassion we provide. John Stossel, the reporter of this story, never did. If he had, we believe 20/20’s story may have been different.
The SPCA of Texas will continue to work to make a difference in our community. If you do have questions or comments, please contact us. My personal cell phone and email address are provided below.
Sincerely,
James Bias
