the rescue of car lot dogs jacob and lucy

Jacob Rottweiler and Lucy Shepherd were doomed to die as cheap alarms in a car lot -- until their Rescue Angel came for them.
And AAS is there to pay all the bills.

Animal Advocates is asked to help rescue dogs every day of the year.   Like these two, they wait for someone to come to them, talk to them, touch them, acknowledge that they exist, that they are alive and can love. They wait for someone to come and take them away from their misery and suffering. See their video
For most dogs, no one comes. Not even their owners touch them, or speak to them kindly, or touch them, except too often to beat them. (See recent reports.)
But Jacob and Lucy were lucky.  They had a rescue angel looking over them.  She came almost every night for two years.
She gave them cookies and bones...

Her visits were their only moments of real happiness...

...the only times when a hand tried to tell them that they were loved.
At last the rescue angel's faithful doggedness was rewarded.  The company was closing and she was told that she could have the dogs she had begged for so many times.  At last, their constant waiting was almost over.

But she had to move fast or the dogs would be dumped at the SPCA.

Animal Advocates was asked for help and we said Yes.  That is what we do, all over BC.  Our bills are reaching $3,000 (March 18th).

Jacob and Lucy's rescue angel came for them, piled them in her little car, and drove to the groomer... being licked all the way. (They smelled rank and Lucy was severely matted.)  Then to the vet for exams and vaccines.  Then to the Willchris Kennels where we would get to see how well they could get along with other dogs and other people, and where they could be assessed by Gary Gibson of Custom Canine. (Assessments will be provided for fostering or adopting applicants who are accepted. Custom Canine is offering a "settling-in session" for free.)
Can you believe that happy face?  Doesn't it light up your heart? Big grins is what it's all about! It took Jacob a few days to start to relax his concern about big male dogs, but he's learning to accept them and even learning to play.

(See the latest good news from one of the kennel staff, below.)

Lucy is a very happy girl! She is getting over her timidity and though she is still very submissive, she is having the time of her life, as these photos show.  She's right in there with the gang.
Lucy is great with the other dogs as we mentioned before, and Jacob has really come along.  He is starting to interact more and even play a little.  He can still be dominant with other *dominant* dogs.  He is very responsive when we divert his attention from other dogs, so all conflicts can easily be avoided.  He is very sweet and he actually seems to crave more human attention than Lucy does.  They continue to be clean inside their kennels.

April 11/12 Lucy's update from her foster family:
Lucy is wonderful!!! She was so happy and playful and came back to me when I called. She seems to be very very pleasant and much better than I was expecting emotionally. She is a real people dog as she likes best to be with me or at least have me in sight.  I think she will be suitable for most homes that have pets already. She seems to be getting a lot out of being around my herd as she is more confident, seeks others to play with, listens well.  She is a real sweetheart and, for the first time, she jumped up on our bed to sleep.  She is also very good with our 2-year old daughter and doesn't seem to startle easy. I am very impressed with Lucy. She deserves happiness.
News from Jacob in his foster home:
Jacob is now in a foster home where it quickly became clear from the way that he immediately acted "right at home" that he like so many dogs who end up in sad and miserable places, was once a family pet, probably dumped at an SPCA or other pound and sold into misery, or given away "free to good home" and handed over to a life of abuse. Then their only hope is that some decent citizen will beg for them, or buy them, or steal them  out of their undeserved pain and misery.

Jacob with Sierra
Jacob is amazingly calm and social.  In his happy foster home a lot of very kind people come and go and Jacob is always glad to see anyone and be kissed and cuddled, as everyone does because he's so irresistible.

We're an animal rescue, humane, and advocacy society.  Animal Advocates Society assists in animal rescue in BC and all over North America.  We have helped dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and horses.

There has been such a flood of appeals for help this year that we may not be able to reply very quickly or at all to more appeals.

AAS is now so well-known for its high standards and experience in all animal welfare and rescue matters that we are asked for advice and help from all over BC, Canada, the U.S. and the world.  For years I have answered each and every appeal with detailed advice that I have learned from 20 years of rescue, advocacy and animal law.

We are currently working on so many projects that I am sorry to have to say that we may not be able to respond to all the cries for help we hear as quickly as we want to. AAS ethical standards are simple and straightforward, but a lot of work: Every rescued dog is given the exact same love and care that I give my own dogs.  Anything less can't be morally justified.  To weigh the costs, to kill, or to rehome without paying to make the dog well in body and spirit is not true animal welfare: it's moving as much product as fast as possible and to demand money for unwell product is a business, not a calling.
