Selling Sick animals: Jasper: bargain basement deals on dying cats *PIC*

Jasper was brought into the SPCA as a stray. He was in terrible condition. He was emaciated, dehydrated, matted, filthy, and had ears literally full of dirt and debris. He sat in an SPCA cage that was not in isolation for eight days. He was not taken to the vet. He was sold as is for one dollar.

Jasper went straight from the SPCA to the vet, and had a complete exam and blood panel. The exam revealed that he was an intact male, even though the SPCA had sold him as a neutered male. When we informed the SPCA of this we were told that for $44 (that is $45 minus the one dollar that was paid to buy him) we could come and pick up a neuter certificate for him. We declined, as he was far too ill to undergo surgery.

Jasper was so riddled with intestinal parasites that the vet was able to feel the strings of worms in his intestine upon abdominal palpation. Despite the severe infestation, a delicate protocal of deworming was started, as the vet felt he was far too sick to even handle a full dose deworming.

Jasper went home to a soft bed, good food, and a quiet and loving environment. He was groomed and cleaned a little each day so as not to stress him, and he was offered anything and everything that he fancied to eat. He seemed content, yet was not rallying as we had hoped.

When Jasper's bloodwork results came back from the lab we were given the sad news that Jasper had tested positive for feline leukemia. Despite all our efforts to boost his health, his condition continued to worsen, and the decision was made to humanely euthanize him.

Jasper the one dollar cat costed over $350 in vet bills, but it was worth every penny to make the last two weeks of his life as comfortable as possible in home that loved him.

All the SPCA did for Jasper was warehouse him in a cage, his medical needs completely unaddressed. The neglect suffered by Jasper at the hands of the SPCA is unforgivable.
