Public lying, private killing: Tyler tells the truth *PIC*

Tyler became eligible for adoption Jan 24, 2004 and was euthanised Feb.12,2004 at the Surrey SPCA.

Carol Sonnex of Victoria was told he was killed because no one wanted to deal with his behaviour and that there were zero resources to help him. She was told he needed a saviour, someone with the time for just him, and that in time he would have been a good boy.

In July Dr. Rebecca Ledger and Nadine Gourkow of the BC SPCA are presenters at LET LIVE CANADA, a pet welfare industry conference in Burnaby, B.C.

Part of what they will present includes, " Managing the Expectation Gap to Increase Successful Dog Adoptions". Nadine Gourkow will be describing how this approach is " being implemented, validated and managed at BC SPCA rescue shelters in Canada".

The BC SPCA claims that it is:

a) ensuring that shelter dogs are trained appropriately to meet the expectations of their new guardians

b) matching assessed dogs with assessed owners

c) ensuring that owners are provided with continued support in order to address behaviour problems as they arise.

Tyler was very young. If the BC SPCA actually does what its p.r. says it does, why were there no resources to help him?

From the Surrey SPCA web site:
Tyler - E
Dog
Rottweiler Mix

Size: Large
Age: Young
Sex: Male
I.D: 38837

Notes: JAN. 24 - Volunteer comments: Tyler is a young and friendly dog. He does have some excitability issues which make him have some behaviours that require work, including playmouthing, and some leash biting. He would require an owner that would put him through obedience, perhaps try him on a new training collar, and someone who really has time to enjoy him and teach him. He is a sweet boy as you can see from the picture, and willingly rolls over for a belly rub. He is also very food motivated which will help with his training.
Please phone or drop by the shelter for more information and quote ID # 38837.
