The Cruelty of Veal and Foie Gras

Write a letter to restaurants that serve the cruelest foods of all.  Phone local restaurants and ask if they serve veal or foie gras.  Ask for the name of the owner or the manager. If they do serve veal or foie gras, write a polite letter educating them on the extreme cruelty of these foods. Print photos of the suffering of veal calves and foie gras geese and attach them to your letter.  Please let us know what response you get: animaladvocates@telus.net

Dear (name of owner or manager),

I am writing in the hope that you will consider removing veal (and/or) foie gras from your menu. You may not know, but the suffering of veal and foie gras geese and ducks is some of the worst cruelty to animals.  Here is a description of the short, sad lives of veal calves:

Male calves are taken from their mothers shortly after birth. Some are slaughtered soon after birth for "bob veal." Others are raised in "open pens," a kind of minimum security prison, and even then they are sometimes chained. Most are destined for the veal crate. The veal crate is a wooden restraining device that is the veal calf's permanent home. It is so small (22" x 54") that the calves cannot turn around or even lie down and stretch and is the ultimate in high-profit, confinement animal agriculture.  Designed to prevent movement (exercise), the crate does its job of atrophying the calves' muscles, thus producing tender "gourmet" veal.  You may read more about this at http://www.britishmeat.com/veal.html

Here is a description of the shocking cruelty that foie gras geese and ducks suffer:

The production of foie gras is one of the most notorious practices in modern agribusiness. To create the unnaturally fattened liver that defines the product, factory farm producers force-feed birds for two to four weeks, shoving a metal tube down their throats two or three times each day. This can cause painful bruising, lacerations, sores, and even organ rupture. Due to this abnormal diet, the birds' livers become diseased and can enlarge up to ten times the normal size, making it difficult for the birds to move comfortably. Often, the birds are intensively confined in filthy warehouses, crammed in small cages where they cannot even turn around or spread their wings. I sincerely hope that you will take a stand against this cruelty and stop serving suffering at your restaurant.
