Okay, so Jennifer Gore feels that spaying/neutering our pets would help prevent these "distemper outbreaks" that lead to the sad demise of huge numbers of cats in the Kamloops SPCA? She is busily berating the public for not practicing spay/neuter when her very own branch of the SPCA does the same.
The Kamloops SPCA still adopts out unaltered animals and does not have funds available for feral/stray cat spay/neuter programs.
Actually when phoned and asked in July of this year, the Kamloops SPCA said it doesn't have any program in place for the feral/stray cat population which produces a bounty of young cats/kittens. What they did say was as follows:
The SPCA is not set up to handle feral colonies.
Ferals are prone to carry more diseases.
Healthy stray cats will be accepted if they have room, euthanized if they don't.
The adult "ferals" will definitely be euthanized.
5 to 6 week old kittens can be rehabbed but they don't have room right now so they will be euthanized.
They currently have 300 cats and only room for 75, cheerily said "It's kitten season you know. It's a vicious circle."
The SPCA does not give people money to spay/neuter feral cats.
Phone a veterinarian myself, maybe they would give me a break on the cost.
I am having trouble writing this post as the contradictory public statements from the SPCA are confusing me no end. One thing I will agree with the SPCA on is, spaying and neutering will decrease the number of cats brought to the Kamloops SPCA.
