June 5 Update:
Cheech loves the other dogs he has met at the shelter and has lots of k9 pals. He is very good with other dogs and really enjoys their company. Cheech is still somewhat insecure around strangers but getting better with every kind person he meets. He is generally good with all women he meets but needs extra time to warm up to men he does not know. Cheech adores to play with toys, balls and is a happy and active pup. He is still in need of an experienced home where he will receive lots of patience, praise, love, and a family dedicated to giving him a better life. Please come and meet Cheech, he is waiting patiently for you here.

Upon arrival:
Cheech has a story similar to many other shelter dogs in search of new homes. He was purchased as a puppy and at only 8 weeks old left to guard his home. Cheech spent many of his most vulnerable days on a chain in the yard of a business he sadly called home. He did not spend much time with people, met only a few strangers, and other animals. Strangers he did meet he was taught to bark at and be wary of. The owners of the other businesses in the area called the SPCA as they were afraid he would spend his life this way. Cheech is in our care now and beginning his life again. Thankfully, Cheech is less than a year old and will have a very long life left to enjoy. He is slowly being introduced to new people and other dogs. It is very important that Cheech receive lots of praise, be introduced to every new situation in a positive manner and take his time to get to know people. We have seen so many wonderful changes in Cheech in the short time since he came to the shelter and anticipate continued improvement as time goes on. He will need an experienced owner who is willing to continue to build his confidence in new situations and give him the guidance needed to ensure he is never scared or alone again. Cheech does know basic commands and is very gentle when taking treats. He wags his tail like crazy when dogs and staff or volunteers he knows walk by. When in the playground with another dog he runs along the fence line playfully bouncing around to get the attention of the other dogs. He will even jump up when you come in to meet him and sit patiently waiting for a treat or a toy. Cheech is not great at fetching yet but is learning. Right now he is a little scared of the ball! Bum rubs are one of his favorite things now and he is perfectly comfortable aiming his butt at you to be rubbed! Cheech is an oversized puppy who needs to learn how to be a companion instead of a lonely guard dog. Cheech is protective of his kennel, scared of people in uniforms and unsure around strangers; especially men as a result of his chained past. If he barks at you when you come to see him please understand he is just learning there are other ways he can greet people. Offer him a treat and speak softly to him, his tail will slowly start to wag and you will be helping him learn to trust new people he meets. Due to his past, we are looking to place Cheech in a home without young children. He needs a home where he will be the center of attention and of all of your affections. Cheech has a ton of love to give and with a little patience, understanding and tlc will be giving it out freely in no time.
