From someone who knows: Amanda Muir on the danger of disease transporting, and other thoughts

From Brindleweb

s/n clinics in the north:

if i am not mistaken, were done some years ago by dr. lawson himself and volunteers.
this was before my time but i do know someone who was involved with these trips and know they were not profitable (no one made any $$$$) but they did benefit the community and animals greatly. i have no idea why it was not continued but...
it IS possible, it IS the solution and animals here WILL die to make room for the animals coming in one way or another...

one such transfer to the delta spca this year brought a pup with parvo in that could have wiped out all the dogs in the shelter had the dog not been isolated by a quick thinking staff member. i again was not there but heard all about it...the spca was going to euthanize this pup but a local vet stepped in to take her on and then she went to rescue.
another dog that came from the same place as this pup did not get sick as her previous home had vaccinated her; but, she did need surgery that no one knew about. it was not until she went to the vet here for spay that her leg injury was noticed. again, the local vet clinic fixed her up with very little cost to the spca.
many outlying shelters do not vaccinate or vet check animals for the same reasons s/n is not done.
is the 'biscuit' fund (whatever that is, i keep hearing about it in the many ads now running on radio) going to fix all these animals as well as the ones filling the shelters already? are the needy animals in the northern shelters even going to be transferred to receive medical/behavioral help or will just the highly adoptable animals board the bus leaving the rest behind? what about an outbreak of distemper or parvo, or even kennel cough as a result of a transfer? solutions to parvo and kennel cough in many shelters are well known...surely no one needs to be reminded of the last bout of kennel cough at the surrey spca and the outcome.

there is a lot more here to think about than the idealic picture of animals that used to run the streets exiting these buses to a new life in a forever home.
i am all for positive changes and helping outlying areas that do not have the resources to help themselves...i just hope the cost is not too great for the animals that fill the shelters here already and that the REAL problem, animal overpopulation, is not ignored.

Transporting animals to other areas is a bandaid solution in my opinion
