Petcetera Adoption Center Co-Operative Program Proposal- March 1, 1999

This document is signed by both Petcetera President and CEO Dan Urbani and B.C. SPCA CEO Doug Brimacombe

Excerpt "Goals and Guidelines"

"A good home, an appropriate home, is one that is created by people who are prepared to give lifelong care to their companion animal. They have a working and practical knowledge of the prinicples of reponsible pet ownership and are prepared to meet those responsibilities on a daily basis. This presents not only a challenge, but also identifies a key opportunity AND a unique responsibility. How is this? It is because a well-designed and comprehensive adoption program is built upon a foundations of education. Through every step of the adoption process, the prospective adopter is made aware of the magnitude of the responsibility he or she is about to undertake. To that end, Petcetera has a number of tools at its disposal: the in-store education centers and classes, the in-store communicaiton center with numerous informational pamphlets and brochures, extensively trained store associates, on-site veterinary staff, etc. Every interaction, from the casual visit to the Adoption Centre through to the interview process and every step between are an opportunity to exercise the responsibility of education the public on responsible pet ownership."

"The Guidelines for operations and adoptions from Petcetera Adoption Centers will be identical to those utilized by the BC SPCA Branches, with references to: Operational Bulletin #10 - Standards for Shelters and Pounds, Branch Operations Manual Unit #1 - Adoption, Animal Welfare Policies #2 - Exotic Birds and Animals as Pets, #40 - Satellite Adoption Programs, and the BC SPCA Recommended Code of Practice for the Care of Pet Shop Animals. The Current Vancouver Regional Branch Adoption guidelines are particularly well designed and articulated - see Appendix A, 'SPCA Guildelines for Responsible Pet Adoptions'."

Has Petcetera upheld its responsibilities as per the agreement drawn up between Petcetera and the B.C. SPCA?
