BCCTV News just ran an update with lots of new info..........
The mother of the deceased boy has a criminal record for drug dealing, and is an addict herself.
The mother has told family members a different version of how the dogs were kept, before Cody was mauled. She told relatives that all 4 dogs were in the kitchen, with a piece of plywood wedged in the doorway. She originally told the police the dogs were in the bsmt. The 2 Rotties that were visiting, actually live in another Maple Ridge home that was previously busted for drugs, and these 2 Rotties were seized during that bust, along with 6 other Rotties! The Border Collie was put to sleep, because it had a history and was previously deemed a dangerous dog.
The 3 other children are not being returned to this mother at this time. The Ministry has taken the kids before too.........
The reporter said "In a rare move, the Children's Ministry is making a statement about this case..." (they normally refuse to comment)
Then the Ministry spokesperson said something to the effect that if they are made aware that there is a dangerous dog in a home with children, they will take action immediately. He implied that nobody reported the dog (deemed dangerous) to the Ministry.
Seems to me our wonderful "system" failed this 3yr old boy. Why did the Ministry allow those dogs to be there, or why didn't they do something? If the Border Collie was deemed dangerous, did the SPCA report this to the Ministry since children were involved?
