Not actually from the crypt, but from the SPCA Clinic in Vancouver.
Some of the stories are pre-release of the Community Consultation Report in November 2001, which promised to reform the SPCA and stop the kind of thing recounted here from happening anymore.
And some are post-release of the Report, adding proof that the SPCA did not reform as promised and therefore AAS has been forced to keep revealing it. We, and others, have found that the SPCA is only driven to improvement by bad publicity - there is no perceptible urge to reform coming from within the SPCA that we or anyone else has been able to observe.
We have seen its lies increase hugely, making all the past lying pale in comparison. We have seen it suddenly change from conniving with puppymillers to keep them in business, to ruining good peoples' lives by seizing healthy animals from them, vilifying them in the media, extracting huge sums of money from them to get their animals back under the threat of their animals being killed or sold. We documented the SPCA seizing animals and then ruthlessly killing them, or killing them with a disease in their chronically-diseased facilities. Or seizing large numbers of large animals and trucking them to hidden locations and then neglecting them to death or into ill health. We have seen it use seizures to enrich itself, even though they cause "distress" even "critical distress", the offence under the PCA Act, for which they are wrongly putting people on trial for. And now the SPCA has added gag orders to its panoply of terror tactics. We have seen it become even more ruthless than it was, something we couldn't have imagined.
We believe that it is killing fewer animals, but there were no honest destruction statistics in the past, and because there is no way to confirm any in the future, we cannot be sure.
After CEO Craig Daniell told the media he would balance the books without impacting direct care to animals, he slashed branch staff and animal welfare programs. And the SPCA is not paying some of its vet bills, telling the vets it hasn't the money, yet it has money to pay lawyers to try to stop AAS from saying this.
Something is still rotten at the BC SPCA, perhaps more than ever....
