Why do nice people want big protection dogs for pets? *LINK* *PIC*

We have discovered that the answer to what kind of person wants to own a Pit bull, a dog bred for high prey drive, to attack without provocation, to fight to the death, and the jaws to do it, is scary. They almost all are of the class that lives on welfare or the edges of it, and are not very educated, and sadly, not very bright. They almost never own homes so they are somewhat transient and so they are often looking to dump their pit bulls.

But why do so many well-educated, stable people want to own Rottweilers?

Our experience with Rottweilers has mostly been positive, just as have our experiences with German shepherds and Dobermans. We believe that because they are bred to protect they are not as inherently dangerous as dogs bred to fight.. But because they are bred to be less trusting and more alert to any perceived danger, they are more inherently dangerous than dogs bred for herding, tracking, retrieving, or purely for companionship.

The difference between Rottweilers and German shepherds and Dobermans is in the jaw and the powerful muscles. The Rottweiler's jaw has a per inch pressure of 2000lbs. These added attributes are what has made the Rottweiler the breed of choice for the backyards of Vancouver's frightened immigrant community, guard dog companies, grow-ops, bikers and other criminal elements.

These scary attributes are the reason why the same sort of person who likes to own a Pit bull, likes to own a Rottweiler.

A civilized society is protected by the law, not animals. Just as the unrestricted ownership of guns mean a population that arms itself with assault rifles and rocket-launchers, a society that allows the unrestricted owning of dogs ends up with unstoppable dogs, like the one pictured below.

In the last few decades our society has suffered a huge increase in crime, especially violent crime. We haven't chosen to deal with that by allowing citizens to own AK7 rifles.

At the same time we have seen a huge increase in large, powerful, dangerous dogs. This is just as wrong as letting citizens and criminals arm themselves with powerful guns.

We used to be able to leave our doors unlocked without fear of theft. Not any more. We used to be able to walk our dogs without fear of attack. Not any more.

AAS loves every dog we have ever met, but there are too many dangerous dog now to help them anymore. SPCAs and pounds are going to have to kill more and more of them. We can't expect the type of person who wants to own a Pit bull to understand that defending the breeding of more is counter to animal welfare, but we can expect real animal welfarists to understand that and to stop defending the short, brutal lives that fighting breeds suffer.

Please read "Dangerous breeds" to see the shape of things to come including so many deaths of these dogs, if animal welfarists don't all tell the truth about dangerous breeds now....
