I took a distemper cat from the infected Vernon SPCA and it didn't occur to me to kill her

Since when was spaying and neutering deemed protection from distemper? This is news to me. And if this is so then why is the SPCA still selling unaltered animals, still turning away pleas for spay/neuter assistance from low income pet owners, and still killing animals at its "shelters" when spaying and neutering has yet to be done?

A few years ago I took in a cat that had been in transient handling by Vernon SPCA staff during an outbreak of feline distemper at that facility. She had recently weaned kittens and was unspayed. Three days after arrival at my home she came down with feline distemper, contracted, I can only logically conclude, at the hands of the Vernon SPCA, which closed its doors the day after I took her due to a distemper outbreak.

I treated this cat with subcutaneous fluids, antibiotics, and anti-nausea drugs, and she made a full recovery within a week, and went on to be spayed and find a permanant home. Not once did it cross my mind to kill her.

I had a dozen other foster cats in my home at the time. They were not isolated from her before she became symptomatic. Once she showed symptoms though, I worried about them, and watched them closely, and stocked up on extra fluids and antibiotics. Not once did I consider killing them because they MIGHT get sick. (And incidentally, none of them did.)

I don't understand why the SPCA is so quick to kill animals who have illnesses that respond so well to supportive therapy. I don't get why the SPCA didn't take that poor cat that died in isolation after two days to a vet. Money I guess. Why waste it on a sick cat?

I don't get why the SPCA then had to kill all the other sixty cats in its so-called "shelter", because they MIGHT have got sick from the one poor distemper cat they denied treatment for and killed two days prior. Lack of ethics I guess.

God, who could do that job and still sleep at night?

40, 50, 60... and more? Excess cats are as big a pest problem in most of BC as rats and mice are

A more fitting slogan could read "easy and effortless disposal"

It seems to me that shelters which safeguard health should be one of the highest priorities
