Does the CEO not know that almost every SPCA branch is ignoring his latest policy on the killing of cats sick with colds and any healthy animals for space? This week it is... We don't ever do that! At least that is what he said in the Richmond News of October 28th.
But just recently the SPCA was upfront about all the killing for space and of cats stupid enough to catch a cold - in the SPCA's diseased cells.
September 24, 2004 Prince George Citizen: "Prince George SPCA staff were forced to put down nearly two dozen cats Wednesday after a virus swept through the communal room. Shelter manager Jeannine Woodhouse and another staff member spent the rest of the day putting down the 22 remaining cats that were in the room." Prince George is just of many SPCAs that kill as a "preventative". And it works stunningly well...not one of the 22 dead cats got sick!
28 October 2004 Richmond News: BC SPCA CEO Craig Daniell: "there is certainly no policy of euthanizing such animals (with upper respiratory infections and fungal infections)."
Of course, the Prince George SPCA said that the cats were very sick with some mysterious illness. If they were, they caught it at the Prince George SPCA. It seems that that is how the SPCA is going to cover its butt from charges that it kills for easily treated upper respiratory disease. But we know it still does, by the bushelfull.
Not even the CEO's P.R. spinmistress, Lorie Chortyk, seems to know what her boss's policy is...
From the Surrey Leader, Oct. 8/04: "BC SPCA spokesperson Lorie Chortyk said many healthy and highly adoptable puppies, kittens and other potential pets are euthanized each year because shelters in remote communities are often full to capacity and do not have a large enough population to provide homes for them. They are overwhelmed by the number of animals being surrendered and abandoned."
Oh those pesky employees, they can't even keep straight a simple thing like "what's today's policy on who we kill for what?"
