PORT HARDY(CKNW/AM980) -- In an ironic twist, an animal control officer with the District of Port Hardy, on northern Vancouver Island, is now facing animal cruelty charges.

Paula Dillabough is facing both criminal and SPCA charges.

The Crown contends Dillabough failed to help a German Shepard that was admitted to her care back in September.

It's alleged the dog wasn't looked at by a vet, and eventually had to be put down.

If convicted of the charges, Dillabough could face 6 months in jail and a 2 thousand dollar fine.

Her first court appearance is set for February 22nd.

This animal control officer was not the owner of the German Shepherd, yet she faces charges.
How is it that the SPCA can lay charges against this woman, while the SPCA previously claimed that only a dog's owner can be charged and gave that as the reason for the SPCA not proceeding with charges against an SPCA staff member in Christmas of 2003?
