Pest control by the BC SPCA

"Even more significant, this approach, similar to "pest control", projects to the general public an underlying adverse attitude toward cats,” said Steve Diller, Executive Director of the SPCA (New York).”

AAS is being sued by the BC SPCA for alleged defamation. Saying that the SPCA has done pest control for decades may be one of the things we have said that the SPCA takes exception to, so it is gratifying that others, more influential than AAS, say the same thing about killing feral cats. We have also said many times, that by killing feral cats, it not only is paid for pest control services, but it educated the public that feral cats are killable pests. The SPCA boasts about its Humane Education, but the real message is that feral cats are killable pests.

AAS has gone further: We say that the SPCA is doing pest control of unwanted pets, dogs, cats, rabbits, etc when it takes in more unwanted animals than it has room for knowing that it will kill some rather than rehome or treat illnesses. This can't ever be called animal welfare - it is pest control, plain and simple.

We have documented proof that some SPCAs are still automatically killing all feral cats brought to them. This is no different than in 1989 when I started animal rescue by helping a feral cat trapper in North Vancouver and the SPCA told me - without batting an eye - that it would kill every one that I brought it.

No real animal welfarist would ever agree to kill hundreds of thousands of pest-pets for money, or to be able to say, "We never turn an animal away", and look saintly to uninformed animal-lovers.
