A major SPCA branch still does not have any policy on which rescue groups get phoned. According to the SPCA manager, this major branch does not even have a list. The BC SPCA still is not practicing even the lowest level of animal welfare. It is still in the used pet sales/disposal business. It's had a long time to put animal welfare policies into place since saying in 2001 that it would reform. BC SPCA CEO, Craig Daniell, has had 18 months to put animal welfare policies in place.
A dog was in a horrible state when he was sold by the SPCA (probably for $145). His ears were badly infected and, to the owner, appear to have been like this for some time. He also has a lump on his leg which, according to his vet, does not seem like a cyst. The owner contacted the SPCA to try to get his money back as his vet bills were rising.
The owner is most upset with the SPCA as all they talked about was returning the dog to the SPCA if he wanted his money back. There is little doubt that if the owner had returned this dog the SPCA would have immediately killed him.
Why was this dog not tended to by the SPCA hospital before being sold? Are the finances so bad at the SPCA that they can't even care for the basic needs of dogs in their shelters?
This is not animal welfare, it is not humane, it is not compassionate. But it is how the pet disposal industry does business.
