These people are metaphorically throwing children to the wolves

Many emails have flooded in, most of them a version of, "In the end regardless of what breed a dog is, it's about their owners
being held accountable, period."

This begs the question of the millions of slow thinkers who argue this - Would you like society to remove all the legislation that protects you and just count on criminals to behave responsibly?

If there was any way to make people behave responsibly there would be no laws, no police, no courts, and no jails. There would be no need, if people could just be made to behave responsibly. Everyone could carry a gun because everyone would be too responsible to misuse it according to the logic of people who defend dangerous dog breeds.

The defenders of powerful dogs bred to attack and yes, kill, and which do attack and kill too frequently, demand a solution that has never been shown to work effectively enough for public safety. These people are metaphorically throwing children to the wolves. That in itself is the height of irresponsibility (and brutal indifference to the terrible disfigurement and deaths that children suffer). Depending on responsible behaviour is not a solution that society is going to accept. Controls of some sort on power breeds is coming...thank goodness, because 200lb man-stopper breeds are coming too. What will the hand-wringers say when those dogs start maiming and killing here too?

Funny thing is...
Spurious argument number one against breed specific controls: Small breeds are just as dangerous as protection/fighting breeds
Spurious argument number five against breed specific controls: Get the dog's owner to carry extra liability insurance
Spurious argument number two against breed specific controls: We just have to make people behave responsibly
Spurious argument number three against breed specific controls: Ban the deed, not the breed
Spurious argument number four against breed specific controls: The "slippery slope" argument
Re: Spurious argument number four against breed specific controls: The "slippery slope" argument
Market corrections are going to take this issue out of the hands of power breed defenders and weak-kneed politicians
Child victims of dog attacks do not die quickly
Dog Bite Law: Severe injuries occur almost exclusively in children less than 10 years of age *LINK*
Pit bulls and Rottweilers 5% in population, 50% of fatal attacks
Victoria: Tougher laws, steeper fines designed to make owners of vicious dogs accountable for actions
Insurance companies are becoming less willing to risk potential lawsuits related to dog bites.
If there has been consideration of holding parents responsible for their children's actions, why are pet owners not?
