Bo Svensson of the Swedish Pitbull terrier Federation objects to what he or she says would be a hidden tax if dog breeders were licensed.

It would hardly be hidden, it would be as open as every tax is.

Svensson does not want dog owners' rights to own power breeds and to breed more, constrained or watched or regulated. He or she objects to increased premiums or withheld home insurance, something that is now happening because his or her breed is a known and documented danger which he or she has done nothing to prevent. The market reacts to reality, and the reality is that certain breeds are costing the insurance industry too much money.

Another reality is that there are too many dogs and too many people who shouldn't own any dog, owning several dogs. Too many dog owners are causing distress in the greater community by their arrogant insistence that they are their dogs have "rights" which supersede the rights of families to enjoy parks. Too many dogs means that wildlife and bird habitat is destroyed, parks become smelly mud holes, feces is everywhere, dog fights are common, and the most serious of all, maulings, disfigurement, and death by dogs is increasing faster than the increase in the general dog population...because of the increase in power breeds. I unwillingly own several large dogs because of the need to rescue and rehome them. The parks I take my dogs to used to be clean and safe. One by one, they are being destroyed, and more and more I see pit bulls and larger power breeds, such as mastiffs and Argentino dogos, taking over.

Market corrections - higher or no insurance premiums, taxes and regulations making it uneconomic to own dangerous dogs, licensing fees making it expensive to own a lot of dogs, especially big dogs (the ones that do the most damage to the environment and to children), breeding regulations and taxes, are going to take this issue out of the hands of power breed defenders and weak-kneed politicians.
