Dear Sirs and Madams,
I am a long time volunteer with the SPCA; for nearly a decade I have made a weekly visit to work at the shelter. The new promises made after the community consultation are encouraging, will I see some good things happen very soon?
Below are the things most important to me, which I urge you to address at the Board of Diectors meeting.
1. Please work with the province to institute some control of breeding laws. We must reduce the number of dogs and cats that are born before we will come close to equalizing the number of good homes and available pets.
2. Please improve your record of enforcement of cruelty to animal laws and local chained dog by-laws. The SPCA has so far failed miserably in this area.
3. Please come up with a plan to put stores selling pets "under the gun". These place should not be selling live animals, at the very least should conform to a high standard of care.
4. Please improve your delivery of education to the public. There is so very little, and this should be a priority. The public should be made aware of cruelty issues, standards of care for pets, puppy mills and pet stores, overpopulation of pets and so on.
5. Please define the standards for employees of the SPCA. They should at least be in agreement (in theory and practise) with your own guidlines regarding cosmetic mutilation and breeding. They should have some knowedge of how to work effectively with the public and with volunteers.
6. Please cap the salaries of executives, and justify the postions.
I do look forward to improvements at the SPCA.
Kim
