Dear Mayor Cambell,
I am sending this in regards to the dog mauling
incident of late. Despite all of the media and public attention surrounding the poor girl's condition, certain most relevant and important issues have been ignored:
1) Dangerous dogs are most often antisocial because they have been raised to be so.
2)Our society allows pet owners to raise their dogs in ways that make them antisocial.
3) There are is no legislation preventing dog owners from isolating dogs, tied up or fenced into yards, with none, minimal, or abusive human contact.
Sadly, in this recent case, the damage has been
done. In the wake of such tragedy, we must realize our responsiblity as a society not only to grieve for Shenica but to also find ways to ensure that such things never occur again. We must understand the root of the problem and kill it there.
The Animals Advocates Society of B.C. has been
investigating this matter for the past couple of
years, and I implore you to read their reports. I hope that you and your council will take measures to make our city safe and peaceful for all its inhabitants.
Sincerely,
Ulara Nakagawa
