Ltr to Mayor Campbell, #14: Set the example

January 5, 2003

The Mayor and Council
The City of Vancouver

Dear Mayor Campbell and Councillors

I applaud you for taking a serious interest in the problem of desocialized yard dogs in the city of Vancouver. This atrocity has been ignored by both the city and the SPCA for far too long. It is my sincere hope that some action will finally be taken by the politicians, who have the real power to enact change.

Animal Advocates Society has worked diligently for years in an effort to persuade the city to do something. Please help them in their efforts by passing the bylaws they have asked for regarding the keeping of yard dogs. It's time to stop the victimization of both dogs and children like Shenica White, who suffer because of irresponsible dog owners.

This problem exists all over our province. The city of Vancouver is not the only city full of desocialized yard dogs and victims of their attacks. Please show the rest of the province that Vancouver is a great city that cares about its children and its animals, and will not tolerate the victimization of either.

With the city of Vancouver to pioneer the way, great changes can happen throughout our province.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Dickson
President, Okanagan Animal Welfare Foundation
